Robert Mann, Assistant Director for Quality and Safety, and Jane Spain, Volunteer Coordinator for the last six months, recently gathered volunteers together for an early Christmas party, an event they hope to repeat each year. They were keen to meet and thank as many as possible of the Trust’s 300+ volunteers for their sterling efforts in person. In his speech, Robert shared how vital volunteers are for the warmth, care and compassion they show our patients. He himself started his NHS career as a volunteer 30 years ago and, when moving into his role here in May from Leeds General Infirmary, he was first met and shown to where he needed to be by Ted, one of our Main Concourse Meet and Greet volunteers.
In all, over 50 volunteers managed to venture out on a chilly December afternoon for an early evening of mingling, buffet, mince pies, quiz and photo booth. Jane and a team of six volunteers had worked together to plan, organise, set up and pack down the event in the RILD’s Atrium, which they decorated to create a Christmassy atmosphere.
The RD&E has over 300 volunteers supporting staff in a variety of ways from meeting and greeting patients to supporting staff in the clinical environment.
